Lopes trio named to NFCA West Region team
Grand Canyon University softball players Randi Johns, Yasmeen Watkins and Tracy Lubken were selected as Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II Second Team West Region members.
Johns, the school's record holder in a multitude of offensive categories, was a College Sports Information Directors of America/Daktronics Second Team West Region choice. A senior first baseman from Waddell, Ariz., Johns (pictured right) also was a First Team PacWest selection, in addition to being chosen as a three-time Academic All-American in the fall and was named Grand Canyon University's Roland Beck Female Scholar-Athlete recipient in April.
Watkins, a senior second baseman from Phoenix who transferred to Grand Canyon after playing two years at Central Arizona College, was a Second Team CoSIDA/Daktronics pick, in addition to being chosen as a First Team PacWest pick. Watkins (pictured left) has been Grand Canyon's most productive run producer the past two seasons, setting school season records for runs batted in since she arrived on campus.
Lubken, a junior outfielder from Scottsdale, Ariz. who transferred to GCU after beginning her collegiate career at Phoenix College, was a First Team PacWest selection after setting a school season record for hits. Lubken also made national history when she cranked three home runs in GCU's win over BYU-Hawaii on March 30. Two of those home runs came in the decisive final inning.
Grand Canyon coach Ann Pierson lauded Johns and Watkins for putting up big numbers and performing at consistent levels. She spoke of Johns' deep desire to play in the postseason, an intrinsic drive that has infused its way into some of the returning players' minds for the future.
"I am very proud of Tracy as well, not only for outstanding performances, but for playing through a few injuries," Pierson said. "She showed up every day and worked as hard as anyone, never finding excuses. She was dependable throughout the season both offensively and defensively and became a front-line performer."
Grand Canyon finished 37-27 this season, setting a school record for wins, becoming the only school this season to sweep Humboldt State, the NCAA Division II defending national champions, in addition to handing three-time defending PacWest champ Hawai'i Pacific its first home conference loss in two years.
