Jovicevic PacWest Player of Year; Draksin Coach of Year
GCU represented with 8 selections on conference teams
Bosko Jovicevic touted backline member Fito Collazo as the best defender in the nation to Grand Canyon University soccer insiders earlier this year. Guess what Bosko, here's news for you: the Pacific West Conference thinks you're the best.
Jovicevic was named the PacWest Player of the Year Thursday in a system where teams are not allowed to vote for their own players.
"I was?" Jovicevic responded when told the news.
Coach Petar Draksin (pictured) was selected as the league Coach of the Year, marking the second year he's claimed the honor after leading the Antelopes to back-to-back league championships, this year with an NCAA Tournament appearance and 11-5-5 record.
Jovicevic, a second team West Region selection from Belgrade, Serbia, paired with fellow first team PacWest selection Fito Collazo in keying the Antelopes' nine shutouts this year. He finished with two goals and four assists for eight points.
"It was a great year for our team first," Jovicevic said. "It was a great year for me, too. I wouldn't be satisfied if our team didn't have a good year. It's a big honor for me to be recognized as the best player in the conference. My teammates and the coaching staff are a big part of what I've become the last three years."
Collazo, a junior from Brophy College Prep, had two goals, starting all 21 games along with Jovicevic. Jordan Demos, a junior holding midfielder from Horizon High School, was GCU's third first team choice. He also started all 21 games, and was a coach on the field.
Daniel Sabillon, a senior midfielder from New Orleans, was a second team choice. He finished with five goals, including two of the prettiest winners you'll witness at the NCAA level, and three assists. Tony Judice, a second team pick from Covington, La., shared the team lead with seven goals and had three assists for 17 points.
Andrew Bailey, a junior forward from San Fernando, Trinidad, was chosen as an honorable mention. Bailey shared the team lead with seven goals and finished with a team-best 19 points. Senior defender Jeff Starkey (Albuquerque, N.M.) was also selected as an honorable mention pick. Starkey's defensive play toughened and tightened as the season wore on, and he became an integral part in GCU's run to the NCAA Tournament. He finished with one assist.
"Personally, it's a big responsibility for me to perform even better next year, and for our team to do even better," Jovicevic said. "Anything less than a Final Four will be a disappointment."
