Tatiana Sumenkova is at the top of her game these days.
Grand Canyon University's freshman No. 6 singles player with Russian roots won her fourth straight match Thursday, beating NCAA Division I opponent Kylie Gleason of Portland State, 6-2, 6-4.
"Tatiana played great, winning her fourth singles match in a row and getting her first win against a Division I player," GCU coach Greg Prudhomme said.
Grand Canyon lost the match, 8-1.
Sumenkova (pictured) is 4-3 at No. 6 singles this year after becoming eligible midway through the season.
The Antelopes played three competitive doubles matches against the Vikings, nearly winning the Nos. 2-3 flights, but were edged in both cases, 8-6.
"It was fun to start off so close in the doubles against a DI school," Prudhomme said. "For a little bit, it looked like there was a possibility that we could go into the singles leading 2-1."
Veronica Brunk fell in three sets at No. 3 singles after rallying to win the first set, 7-6 (7-4).
"Veronica made a nice comeback to win the first set in a tiebreaker," Prudhomme said. "Her opponent worked hard to get back into the match and win in the third set tiebreaker."
GCU will compete at the Ojai Tournament next Thursday through Saturday.
