GCU Men Defeat Academy of Art in Overtime
Junior midfielder/forward Juan Mendez (pictured, Bolivia/Horizon) scored at 95:18 off an assist by freshman forward Kyle Ciliento (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle) at 95:18, lifting the Grand Canyon University (GCU) men's soccer team to a 2-1 overtime victory over Academy of Art University (AAU) Saturday in San Francisco.
It was the second goal of the season for Mendez, who assisted on the Antelopes' first goal of the game, by sophomore defender/forward Nick Sykes (Boise, ID/Mountain View) at 84:52. Ciliento now has two assists and Sykes two goals for GCU (5-1-1, 2-0 Pacific West Conference).
The 'Lopes had six shots on goal in the first half, but failed to score. AAU goalkeeper Daniel Waller had five saves and the team had one. The intensity picked up early in the second half as the teams combined for five yellow cards in a 20-minute span. Urban Knights forward Brazer Bozlak scored the game's first goal off an assist by midfielder/defender Kyle Mannschreck at 71:45. Ian Sutherland, who replaced Waller at halftime, had two saves but allowed both goals.
For the game, GCU outshot AAU (3-6-1, 0-4) 16-8 and had an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.
'Lopes junior goalkeeper Ben Paneccasio (Sydney, Australia/Roseban K College) had two saves in the second half and one in overtime.
GCU plays Notre Dame de Namur (2-7, 2-0) today at 4 p.m. in Belmont, Calif.
