KONA, Hawaii -- Grand Canyon University women's tennis team lost a tough match to Chaminade, 5-4, Thursday in the first round of the Pacific West Conference Championships.
Grand Canyon claimed two of the doubles matches and two singles flights, but couldn't nab the decisive fifth victory to secure a team win.
"The girls lost a great match today," GCU coach Greg Prudhomme said. "They played really hard, and just came up a little short. I give credit to the Chaminade team for their effort today. They earned the win."
GCU's Karen Peltin beat Stacey Chaussay, 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) at No. 4 singles. Grand Canyon's Tatiana Sumenkova beat Kiana Iuado, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.
Peltin was a double winner as she teammed up with Mandy Prudhomme to beat Chaussay and Natalie Phanpherndy, 8-5, at No. 2 doubles.
GCU's Amanda Jackson (pictured) and Stefanie Griffin beat Silkie Kawahkui and Iuado, 8-3, at No. 3 doubles.
Grand Canyon (9-9) will meet Notre Dame de Namur at 3 p.m. HT Friday in the tournament's consolation bracket.
The Antelopes host Division I Portland State University 11 a.m. Thursday at Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale in the final match of the regular season.
