ANCHORAGE -- Samantha Murphy (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep) scored 17 points and became only the third player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau in Grand Canyon's 78-58 win over Alaska-Fairbanks in the AT&T Classic at Wells Fargo Sports Complex Friday.
The 'Lopes will take on host and No. 4-ranked Alaska-Anchorage Saturday.
The junior guard has 1,008 points for her career. Jennifer Cobb (2002-07) is the school's all-time leading scorer with 1,281 points. Senior guard Rosalyn Nelson (Phoenix, Ariz./Deer Valley) is second on the list with 1,184.
GCU improved to 5-2 on the season.
Junior Katrina Graham (pictured, Mesa, Ariz./Desert Mountain/Mesa CC) added 11 points.
Grand Canyon had 23 assists on 29 made baskets. Shareka Purnell (Dale City, Va./C.D. Hylton/UALR) and Kayla Fisher (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) each had five assists and Kristi Girdley (Aliso Viejo, Calif./Aliso Niguel) added four. Purnell also had four steals. Stacy Haddow (Chino Valley, Ariz./Chino Valley) and Ashley Hardin (Phoenix, Ariz./Marcos de Niza/No. Arizona) were top rebounders with seven apiece.
GCU led by 24 at halftime and by as much as 34 in the second half.
