Grand Canyon got a taste of the best Wednesday.
The Antelopes women's tennis team lost to No. 1 BYU-Hawaii 5-0 in St. George, Utah. Their match with the nation's top team was called after the Seasiders secured the win because GCU had another match with Chaminade immediately afterwards.
GCU lost to Chaminade 6-3.
"We had two tough (losses), yet learning experiences on the court today," Lopes coach Greg Prudhomme said.
Stephanie Haldeman lost the first set to BYU-Hawaii's Ramona Husaru 6-2, but was ahead 4-3 in the second set when her match was called.
Against Chaminade, GCU's Marie-Caroline Legros beat Tiffany Devincent 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Sheila Johnson beat Kawehi Leong 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5. Amanda Jackson (pictured) defeated Kiana Iwado 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6.
Legros' win over Devincent evened her overall singles record at 6-6 to remain at .500.
"That is a great achievement this late in the season for a freshman at No. 1," Prudhomme said.
Johnson, whose match with BYU-Hawaii's Ayako Ikeda was also halted before completion, improved to a team-best 8-6 in singles play.
Grand Canyon will play Chaminade in a rematch at noon Thursday to open the PacWest Championships in St. George.
