GCU shuts out BYU-Hawaii in doubleheader sweep
Grand Canyon opened Pacific West Conference play Monday with a doubleheader sweep at BYU-Hawaii in Laie, Hawaii. The Antelopes won 2-0 and 11-0.
GCU pitcher Megan Niver improved to 4-4 overall with her second shutout of the season in the opener as the Antelopes (7-8-1, 2-0 PacWest) used just four hits, including a pair from Strohm Fouty and a 1 for 3 day from Erica Ritter, who scored both runs, to begin league play with a win. Niver held BYU-Hawaii (3-16, 2-4) to four hits and no walks.
In Game 2, Lopes starter Michelle Farrell (pictured) picked up her first shutout of the season, holding the Seasiders to four hits, three walks and struck out five. She improved to 3-4.
GCU's Randi Johns went 4 for 5, doubled and drove in two runs. Tana Holtorf was 2 for 5 with two RBI, and Fouty had two hits and drove in a pair.
Fouty stoled a base in each game, increasing her team-leading mark to 10 this year.
Catcher Erin Ladd's six-game hitting streak came to an end in the first game.
