PHOENIX-
Jon Hamel's (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon HS) bases clearing triple in the eighth inning proved to be the game winner as Canyon withstands a five run top-half of the ninth inning, to beat Portland State 9-8, and run its record to 6-1 Saturday afternoon at Brazell Stadium.
Portland State (1-2) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning behind a Rick Southall RBI triple. The Vikings would hold that lead until the bottom of the third when sophomore
Brian Sellier (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe HS) put the 'Lopes on the board with a three-run home run over the left-center field wall.
Starting pitcher
Eric Doble (Casa Grande, A'ZJCase Grande HS) threw six and two thirds innings allowing two earned runs while striking out eight.
Jeremy Aikins (Phoenix, A'ZJSouth Mountain CC) came on in relief and allowed five runs on three hits while striking out six to pick up his first win of the year.
Rudy Zarfas' grand slam in the ninth pulled the Vikings to within one but could not get any closer as David Ferres struck out, stranding two, to end the game.
In game 1, Canyon scored seven runs on four hits and two Vikings' errors in the second inning in route to a convincing 13-3 win in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader.
Senior
Rob Price (Glendale, A'ZJDeer Valley HS) pitched his first complete game of the year allowing only three runs on six hits to notch his second win of the year and to give Portland State its first loss on the season. Sophomore
Bill Curtis (Grand Rapids, MI/Forest Hills Northern HS) went 2-for-3 with 2 RBl's including his fourth double of the young year to lead the 'Lopes to their fifth win of the year.
Vikings starting pitcher Josh Pearce was roughed up early by the 'Lopes, allowing seven runs (five earned) on four hits in only one and one-third innings of work.
The series concludes on Sunday with a single game at 1 p.m.
