Mark Ellis, a former NCAA Division I National Champion and two-time All-American, is in his first season as an assistant coach for the Grand Canyon University wrestling program.
Ellis spent the 2013-14 season coaching at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, alongside current first-year GCU head coach Jon Sioredas, where they helped guide the Mocs into the Top 20 in the Division I dual meet national rankings. Ellis also coached at his alma mater, the University of Missouri, where he helped produce five NCAA Division I All-Americans, as well as a seventh place team finish at the 2013 NCAA Division I Tournament.
“Coach Ellis understands the process of becoming great, both on the mat and in the classroom,” said Sioredas. “More importantly, he understands the third dimension of coaching, which is coaching character. His leadership style is contagious and will make an immediate impact on our team."
Ellis claimed the national championship in 2009 to become the second wrestler at Missouri to win a title. He entered the tournament as the weight class's No. 2 seed and earned five wins over ranked wrestlers at the tournament, closing things out with a 3-2 win over No. 5 Konrad Dudziak (Duke) in tiebreakers. Ellis became a two-time All-American the following year when he captured sixth to become the 13th wrestler in Tiger history to be crowned an All-American on multiple occasions.
He finished his national championship campaign with a 31-3 record, the fifth-best winning percentage (.912) in a single season in program history, and closed out his Tiger career with a 90-39 record. Ellis was the program's Most Outstanding Wrestler in 2009 and captured the Ed Lampitt Award in 2010. He currently ranks sixth all-time in career falls, pinning 30 opponents in his career.
A native of Peculiar, MO, Ellis was a Missouri High School State Champion and High School Senior National All-American. He was also an All-Conference football player on a Top 25 nationally ranked program.
Ellis graduated from Mizzou with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture. He resides in Phoenix, AZ with his wife Nicole Ellis.
