August was part of the Lopes staff that led the team to its winningest season (22-8) and first NCAA tournament appearance in 2023. GCU had five players received All-America honors (one second team and four honorable mentions) from the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
August comes from Denver serving as the volunteer assistant coach for the women's volleyball program in 2021. He was part of a coaching staff that led the Pioneers to a 23-6 record and the third seed in the Summit League Championship.Â
Originally from Southern California, August first started playing volleyball at the age of 14 for San Clemente High School, and 949 Volleyball Club. After his high school and club career, August went on to play at UC Irvine for one season, but decided to take the junior college route the next two years at Irvine Valley College. August went on to earn Orange Empire Conference first team honors, as well as MVP in the 2016-2018 seasons.
After his two years at Irvine Valley, August planned to head overseas and play professionally. Prior to going overseas, Matthew was able to play for the USA Men’s National Team and brought home a silver medal from the NORCECA Cup in the summer of 2019. After one year of playing the U.S. professional league, the NVA, and with the USA Men’s National Team August signed a contract overseas, in the Czech Republic.
In the fall of 2019, August went to Brno, Czech Republic to start his professional career. In just his first season August led his club, Volejbol Brno to a bronze medal finish in the Czech Extraliga while leading the team in blocks, and hitting percentage. In the summer of 2020, August signed his second contract with Black Volley Beskydy, also from the Czech Republic. That season August was a top three middle blocker in the league leading his team in blocks.
