Michael Salazar returns home to his alma mater and begins his first season as assistant coach/recruiting coordinator for the 2026-27 season.
Salazar joins GCU via James Madison, where he served as assistant coach for the Dukes for two seasons (2024-26). With JMU, he helped lead the squad to back-to-back fifth place finishes in the Sun Belt Conference Championship, the best finish since joining in 2022-23. JMU also recorded six team finishes inside the top five in 2025-26 and posted the fifth-lowest team stroke average (288.76) in school history.
While at JMU, Salazar coached Václav Tichý to two of the four lowest single season scoring averages in program history with a 71.50 in 2024-25. He also coached Daniel Cheng to Second Team All-Sun Belt honors in two consecutive seasons.
Salazar was a standout player in college, earning NJCAA All-American honors twice while winning five tournament championships at Midland Community College in Texas. He then transferred to GCU, where under Mueller, became an All-WAC Second Team recipient in 2021. He won two individual tournament champions while at GCU from 2019-21.
Prior to JMU, Salazar played professionally from 2021-2023 before taking his first assistant coching job at Garden City CC. He also earned his tour card on the Gira de Golf Tour in Mexico from 2022-2023.
Salazar received his bachelor's degree from Grand Canyon in 2020 in justice studies. He also earned a master's degree from GCU in 2022 in legal studies.
