Kyle Porter joined the GCU Sports Performance staff in June of 2020 as the Assistant Director of Sports Performance, working with Men’s Soccer and (Men’s and Women’s) Tennis.
Prior to GCU, Porter was the Vice President of Athletic Performance at the Center for Athletic Performance & Physical Therapy, managing four locations and directing sports performance for multiple youth clubs, including: Phoenix Premier FC, SC del Sol Developmental Academy, Junior Bobcats Hockey, and Victorium Volleyball Club. Porter is also the Director of Soccer Performance with FC Arizona, the founder/owner of Porter’s Athletic Performance (a soccer performance consultancy business), and works with Arizona Soccer Association’s Olympic Development Program as an Assistant Coach and Soccer Performance Coach.
Porter started his performance coaching career in Phoenix, AZ in 2013, founding Porter’s Athletic Performance, which specializes in soccer performance training. He has held other roles since 2013, including Director of Soccer Performance and Soccer Coach with Ahwatukee Foothills Soccer Club (AFSC, 2013 – 2016), Phoenix Premier FC (PPFC, 2016 – 2019), Soccer Performance Coach with Sporting AZ FC (2018 UPSL National Runner Up, 2018 Lamar Hunt Open Cup 4th Round Appearance), and Soccer Performance Coach and Assistant Coach with Team USA 6v6 in the 2018 and 2019 Socca World Cup held in Lisbon, Portugal and Crete, Greece, respectively. Before getting into coaching full time, Porter worked in the finance industry as a credit analyst and portfolio manager for three years, specializing in agricultural lending.
Porter graduated from A.T. Still University in December 2019 with an M.S. in Kinesiology completing a dual tract in Corrective Exercise and Orthopedic Rehabilitation and Sport Psychology. He is also an NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS, 2017), EXOS Performance Specialist (XPS, 2017), Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT – 200-hour level, 2018), and United States Soccer Federation (USSF, 2016) D License Soccer Coach. Porter also holds the Functional Movement Screen (FMS, 2017) Level 1 Certification and will be pursuing his PhD in Performance Psychology at Grand Canyon University starting in 2021.
Porter played college soccer at Trinity University in San Antonio, TX where he was a 2-year captain (2011 & 2012), winning four Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Championships, advancing to the NCAA Division III National Tournament four times (2008, 2010, 2011, 2012), with three Sweet Sixteen (2008, 2010, 2012) berths and one Elite Eight (2008) appearance. Porter medically red shirted in his 2009 season due to two labral repairs in his right (2009) and left (2010) hips and tore his right ACL at the end of the 2011 season. Withstanding injuries, Porter was selected as 1st Team All-SCAC his redshirt sophomore, junior, and senior seasons (2010-12) and was named to the All-Southwest Region 2nd Team in 2011. Porter was also named to the Academic All – SCAC team five years in a row (2008 – 2012). Porter graduated from Trinity in December of 2012 with a B.S. in Business Administration completing a dual tract in Investment Finance and Marketing.
Porter has been involved in soccer performance as a player and coach for 16+ years. Growing up in Albuquerque, NM, Porter started training as an athlete in sports performance at the age of 14, working with Aaron Day, who was the University of New Mexico (UNM) Men’s Soccer and Men’s Basketball Strength and Conditioning Coach. Working with Coach Day throughout high school and college helped Porter realize his tremendous passion for sports performance, especially as it pertains to soccer. While in New Mexico, Porter won five New Mexico State Championships: two 5A High School State Championships and three New Mexico Club State Championships. Porter was also selected to the Region IV Olympic Development Training Pool (top 40 players in Region IV, 2005) and 5A 1st Team All-State as a senior captain at Eldorado High School (2008).
Porter is the youngest of three with an older brother who lives in San Diego and an older sister who lives in Albuquerque, NM. Both of Kyle’s parents live in Albuquerque, NM. He is the uncle of three with three nephews and has a red nose pit bull named Scholes after Paul Scholes, formerly of Manchester United. His other passions include yoga and snowboarding.
