Matt Haggerty completed his first season as GCU's director of baseball operations in 2023 after serving as a graduate manager with the program for the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
"This is an incredible opportunity to continue to help elevate this program," Haggerty said at the time of his hiring. "The atmosphere around this community, this university, this team and this staff is electric. What has been built here and what will continue to grow in this next era is going to be incredible. It is an honor and privilege to be able to be a part of this new era for GCU Baseball."
In his first two seasons on staff, Haggerty was a part of teams who went to the school's first and second NCAA tournaments. The Lopes were ranked in the top 25 and made the field as an at-large selection in 2022.
After being elevated to the director of operations role in 2023, the Lopes won a third consecutive WAC Regular-Season Championship.
"Matt Haggerty has played a major role in the program for the past two seasons as a graduate manager," Wallis said. "I am proud to promote him to director of baseball operations. He has earned it."
A native of Gilbert, Arizona, Haggerty appeared in 86 games as a Lopes outfielder for the program's first three years back at the Division I level. He hit .257 for his career with 14 extra-base hits and 36 RBIs.
Haggerty — along with Lopes volunteer assistant Paul Panaccione — helped GCU claim the 2015 WAC regular-season title.
Following three years in a Lopes uniform, Haggerty concluded his playing career at Colorado Mesa in 2017 where he hit .338.
Haggerty continues a family tradition of Lopes baseball, as his dad, Jim, was a Grand Canyon assistant under Gil Stafford in 1985 and 1986 where the Lopes went 102-42 and claimed a 1986 NAIA national championship.
