TUCSON – Grand Canyon men's golf completed day one of the AZ Thunderbird Intercollegiate down south in Tucson at the Tucson Country Club, notching a 1 over card before play was halted due to darkness.
LEADERBOARD
The 1 over score is sixth out of 14 schools. The field consists of five teams ranked in the top 35 of the Clippd Scoreboard rankings, including No. 5 Arizona State and fellow Mountain West school No. 18 New Mexico.
GCU shot 2 under in the first round, led by sophomore Måns Boje's 4 under 68 that featured four birdies to no bogeys. Boje is 21st overall and 1 over in total with three holes to play in the second round.
Sophomore
Nixon Lauritzen shot even in his first round with four birdies and heated up in the second, carding four birdies to just one bogey. Like Boje, he has three holes remaining in his second round and is 13th overall at 3 under.
Sophomore Mathew Diehl and freshman
Daniel Nilsson are 3 over for the tournament and tied for 39th while junior
Gavin O'Neill is 53rd at 4 over. Diehl has six birdies for the tournament whereas Nilsson went birdie-birdie-bogey-eagle on holes 11 through 14 in the second round. O'Neill has four birdies for his tournament with five holes to play.
No. 32 Long Beach State leads the field at 21 under, followed by host school No. 22 Arizona at 19 under and Arizona State at 17 under. The Lopes trail Colorado by seven strokes for fifth place and are ahead of both Mountain West schools competing alongside them – two shots above New Mexico and five shots over Wyoming.
The Mountain West Championship will be held in Tucson at the Omni National Resort May 3-5.
