Grand Canyon used two explosive innings and hung on late to defeat Saint Mary's 9-8 on Saturday afternoon at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark in the first of two Lopes' games.
The Lopes (7-12) scored four runs in both the second and sixth innings, providing just enough offense to hold off a late Gaels rally.
Sophomore second baseman
Jake Sanko led the offense with a three-hit day, freshman third baseman
Jose Lopez III blasted his first career home run, and junior right-hander
JT Guerrero earned his first win as a Lope with six strong innings on the mound.
Both teams struck in the second inning, with GCU quickly turning a one-run deficit into a 4-1 lead. Junior catcher
Marcus Galvan started the rally with an RBI single before Sanko followed with a run-scoring hit to center. Junior right fielder
Billy Scaldeferri drove in two more runs with a single to left, capping a four-run frame that put the Lopes in control early.
The Lopes added another run in the third when Lopez launched a 407-foot solo homer to deep center field, the freshman's first home run.
Saint Mary's answered with two runs in the fourth to cut the deficit to 5-3, but GCU responded again in the sixth with another four-run inning.
Senior designated hitter
Dominic Chacon doubled to start the rally before junior
Trevor Schmidt delivered a pinch-hit RBI single. A Gaels throwing error allowed another run to score, Galvan added an RBI double and Scaldeferri lifted a sacrifice fly to extend the Lopes' lead to 9-3.
That lead proved to be just enough.
Saint Mary's added a run in the seventh and four more in the eighth to narrow its deficit to 9-8. With two innings of work, senior righty Cameron Cunnings earned his first save. Cunnings used a double play to help alleviate a jam in the eighth and then tossed a 1-2-3 ninth.
Sanko finished 3 for 5 with an RBI and a double, while Galvan drove in two runs and scored twice. Scaldeferri also finished with three RBIs as the Lopes totaled 10 hits.
On the mound, Guerrero worked six innings to earn his first win at GCU, allowing three runs (two earned) while striking out two.
Despite the late push from the Gaels, the early offensive bursts and Guerrero's steady start helped the Lopes secure the one-run victory.
GCU continues its Saturday with a 6 p.m. game against Rice.
