SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Grand Canyon lost for the first time in 2026 on Saturday afternoon at Salt River Fields, as Penn State struck for five runs in the fifth to take a lead and win 9-3 in the MLB Desert Invitational.
GCU struck first in the second when redshirt freshman outfielder
Max Charles lined an RBI triple to left to score junior first baseman
Cannon Peery. Charles' line drive split the left and center fielders and rolled all the way to the wall as Peery scored easily and Charles slid head-first into third base.
In his first Lopes start, junior right-hander
Nicholas Robb kept the Nittany Lions' lineup in check. Penn State replied to Charles' RBI triple with a game-tying single in the fourth.
Penn State's decisive blow came in the fifth after a pitching change, when the Nittany Lions plated five runs on five hits, including a two-run triple and another two-run triple later in the inning, turning a tie game into a 6-1 lead.
The Lopes showed resilience late, scoring once in the seventh and once in the ninth. In the seventh, junior shortstop
Camden Bates reached on an error and later scored on a sacrifice fly by graduate catcher
Mito Perez. Freshman pinch-hitter
Tanner Johns took care of his first career hit and first career RBI in the ninth to bring home senior outfielder
Dominic Chacon, but GCU left 13 runners on base and finished 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position.
Robb gave GCU a steady start, allowing one run on four hits over four innings with five strikeouts.
GCU will conclude its fourth appearance in the MLB Desert Invitational with a 5:30 p.m. Sunday game against Nebraska at Sloan Park, the site of the 2026 Mountain West Championship. The Lopes will look to continue recent success against the Huskers after last year's 3-1 home victory over then-No. 23 Nebraska. Junior lefty
Chase Frey will get the ball for the first time in his GCU career in a game that will stream on
