It was a tale of two halves for Grand Canyon women's basketball Saturday afternoon at Global Credit Union Arena.
GCU orchestrated a first-quarter run that electrified the crowd of 1,104 on Girl Scout Cookie Kick-off Day, but it was Boise State who prevailed 75-65 to even the series at 1-1 this season.
The loss was the second straight for GCU, which moves to 5-5 in Mountain West play at the halfway point of the conference season. Boise State (16-5, 7-3 MW) extended its winning streak to six games with its last loss coming to the hands of GCU on Jan. 3, the Broncos' only home loss of the season.
"We talked about before the game that it was a group project," said Lopes head coach
Winston Gandy, whose team was missing starter
Anisa Jeffries due to illness, "Everybody needed to do and bring what they do. Unfortunately, we didn't get a very high grade on that project.:
Boise State ran out to an 8-0 lead that forced a Lopes timeout and held a 15-4 advantage four minutes into the contest. But GCU used the crowd to its advantage to get back into the game, rattling off a 12-0 run for its first lead at 16-15.
That run continued through the first quarter, eventually finishing at 20-4 to close out the first quarter for a 24-19 lead.
GCU freshman
Norah Moo and graduate
Ale'jah Douglas each came off the bench for six first-quarter points with sophomore guard
Chloe Mann and sophomore center
Faith Carson scoring four to aid the run.
The Lopes led 28-21 in the early portion of the second quarter and 32-27 with four minutes to play in the half. Boise State chipped away at the lead, eventually regaining it off a Dani Bayes layup with 44 seconds to spare.
Mann took the next possession up top and drove right, fading away from the basket near the baseline to give GCU a 36-35 advantage into halftime.
GCU shot 45% in the first half, including 56% in the first quarter.
The Broncos began the second half like they did the first, opening the second act on a 14-3 run to lead by 10 midway through the third. Boise State outscored the Lopes 23-12 for the quarter and led 58-48 at quarter's end.
Boise State climbed to a 69-52 lead midway through the fourth. While GCU matched the Broncos scoring output for the quarter, the Lopes fell by 10 with a 27% shooting output in the second half.
Bayes led all scorers with 23 points, going 8 of 8 from the free throw line. The Broncos entered the day fifth in the nation in 3-point percentage and finished the afternoon 6 of 13 (46%) on 3s.
"Bayes lit us up," Gandy said. "She could have it any way she wanted."
Douglas led the Lopes with 16 points and three 3-pointers, and she was followed by junior guard
Julianna LaMendola with 14 points and Moo with a season-high 12 points, adding five rebounds and two blocks to her day.
GCU heads back on the road for a midweek morning matchup Wednesday at Utah State (6-13, 2-8 MW). Tipoff is at 11 a.m. Phoenix time.
