LaMendola, Zounia named Player and Freshman of the Week
After a 2-0 week that saw GCU take down Nevada at home and defeat New Mexico on the road, junior guard Julianna LaMendola and freshman Ines Zounia were named this week's Mountain West players of the week.
LaMendola was named player of the week, with Zounia garnering freshman honors. The player of the week is the first this season for GCU, while Zounia claims the freshman accolade for the second time and third time in total for the Lopes.
A junior from Coppell, Texas, LaMendola averaged 15.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and shot 52% from the floor against the Wolf Pack and Lobos. LaMendola poured in 17 points against Nevada and followed that with a 14-point, 14 rebound double-double at New Mexico, her second double-double this season.
She shot 8 of 9 from the free throw line, improving GCU's Mountain West best free throw percentage to 76.2%.
From Lille, France, Zounia finished three points shy of LaMendola's point total for the week, tallying 28 (14.0 ppg) with eight rebounds and three blocks. Zounia was efficient from the floor, shooting 62% (11 of 17) with a 4 of 6 clip against the Lobos. She knocked in four 3 pointers and mirrored LaMendola's scoring output against Nevada with 17 points.
