The Mountain West released its preseason coaches poll with conference players to watch for the upcoming season.
Three GCU players made the Mountain West Player Watch List: returning all-conference midfielder
AJ Loera, and newcomers
Ellie Johannes and
Neve Renwick.Â
Loera, who enters her senior season as a Lopes captain, is coming off a 2024 season in which she led the 11-6-1 Lopes in points (11), goals (three) and assists (five). The Thornton, Colorado, native has been selected to All-WAC first and second teams over the past two seasons and has made 46 career starts at GCU.

Johannes, a sophomore, will make her GCU debut in the coming weeks after playing her first two seasons at Indiana. The forward, originally from nearby Glendale, showed tremendous goal-scoring ability in the Lopes' spring season with scores in almost every match. Johannes transferred to GCU in January after the 2024 season.
Renwick, a junior forward, also projects to add significantly to the Lopes' offensive production this fall. Renwick, a native of Sheffield, England, scored 15 goals over her first two seasons at Tennessee Tech. She made the All-Ohio Valley first team in both seasons, winning OVC Forward of the Year in 2024. Renwick played with Auburn in the spring before deciding to call Phoenix home for this season.
Grand Canyon was picked to take fifth in the preseason coaches poll, which put Utah State, which won last season's MW Championship, and Boise State, which won the MW regular-season title last season, in the top two spots. Following them, Colorado State and San Diego State were picked to take third and fourth, respectively.
GCUÂ will not face Utah State or Colorado State in the regular season but plays Boise State and San Diego State at home.
The Lopes open conference play at GCU Stadium against SDSU on Sept. 25, while the regular season kicks off at home on Aug.14 when the Lopes host UC Irvine.
