Lopes scatter as summer ball gets underway

GCU players develop with heavy concentration in Northwoods, West Coast leagues
Following the 2025 season, Grand Canyon baseball players are heading to summer leagues across the country to further develop their skills and gain valuable experience against top collegiate competition.
Two Lopes will participate in the MLB Draft League. Junior shortstop Emilio Barreras will play for the Frederick Keys in Maryland, while incoming left-handed pitcher Chase Frey joins the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in Ohio.
Junior right-hander Jace Smith is headed to the Appalachian League to play for the Greeneville Flyboys. Junior lefty Chance Key will compete in the Prospect League with the Clinton LumberKings.
The Northwoods League, known for its highly attended games and strong competition, will feature six GCU players this summer. Sophomores Cannon Peery and Marcus Galvan will suit up for the Mankato Moondogs in Minnesota. Sophomore outfielder Carson Ohland joins the La Crosse Loggers (Wisconsin), junior infielder Cael Boever will play for the Wausau Woodchucks (Wisconsin) and freshman infielder Hunter Smolinski is set to compete for the Battle Creek Battle Jacks (Michigan).
Eleven Lopes are taking their talents to the West Coast League, which spans Oregon, Washington and British Columbia. Sophomore infielders Troy Sanders and Billy Scaldeferri will play for the Walla Walla Sweets (Washington). Junior infielder Austin Matranga will join the Springfield Drifters (Oregon). Freshman utilityman Gunnar Penzkover and freshman infielder Jake Sanko will pitch for the Wenatchee AppleSox, while incoming outfielder Dillon Anderson joins the Yakima Valley Pippins. Freshman pitcher Billy Gregory and incoming freshman pitcher Landon Sloan will both suit up for the Portland Pickles.
Rounding out the list, incoming players Trevor Schmidt and Tommy McGuire will play in the California Collegiate League with the Orange County Riptide.
These summer assignments offer a chance for GCU players to compete at a high level and return to Phoenix prepared for the 2026 campaign.
