GCU senior had 8 hits, 16 RBIs, 4 home runs in weekend series
After a red-hot stretch at the plate, Grand Canyon senior outfielder Michael Diaz was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and WAC Player of the Week.
He was also the top offensive performer nationally, per D1Baseball.com and 6-4-3 Charts.
"That's what you would call being in the zone this weekend," GCU head coach Gregg Wallis said. "I don't know that I've seen a player that hot in one-weekend span in my career. Maybe (current Major Leaguer) Jacob Wilson. But it seemed like every time Michael came up in a big situation, he got the barrel on the ball and hit it a long way. That's something that is a very special weekend for Michael Diaz."
Diaz was the offensive highlight of the Lopes' 4-1 week with an explosive offensive showing during GCU's road sweep of California Baptist. Over the four-game span, Diaz went 8 for 14 (.571) with 16 RBIs, four home runs, seven runs scored and a triple.
Diaz started the week with a walk in a pinch-hit appearance against Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday. From there, he ignited at the plate:
April 4 at CBU: 2 for 3 with a home run, triple and four RBIs
April 5 at CBU: 3 for 4 with two home runs, five RBIs and three runs
The Phoenix native lifted his season average to .302 and took the Lopes' lead with eight home runs on the season. He posted a 1.357 slugging percentage for the week, providing the middle-of-the-lineup firepower that fueled GCU's weekend dominance.
Diaz was GCU's sixth WAC weekly award winner this season with three hitters and three pitchers earning recognition.
