Lopes set for 1st MPSF Championship tournament

GCU to face 4th-seeded Cal in opening match Wednesday

The Grand Canyon beach volleyball team will open play Wednesday morning in the inaugural Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Beach Volleyball Championship tournament with a first-round dual against California at Spiker Beach in Huntington Beach, California.

The fifth-seeded Lopes (22-9) are set to face fourth-seeded California (25-7) in the third match of the 12-dual, double-elimination tournament at 12:30 p.m. GCU and Cal are nationally ranked at No. 13 and No. 9, respectively.

The winner of Wednesday's match will advance to face top-seeded UCLA, ranked No. 2 nationally, on Thursday at 11 a.m. while the loser drops into the elimination bracket and play at 2 p.m. Wednesday or 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

The championship dual will be contested at noon Friday with the winner earning the MPSF's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. All 12 matches will be streamed live on B1G+ with BTN televising Friday's three concluding matches, including the title dual.
