LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. – Grand Canyon's quest for the WAC Championship title began Monday at Wigwam Golf Club's Gold Course in Litchfield Park.
GCU sits in fourth place with an 11-over-par score, five strokes back of leader Tarleton State with two rounds to play. The Lopes are four shots back of California Baptist and UT Arlington, who are tied for second at 7 over. The winner of the WAC Championship earns the conference's automatic bid into an NCAA regional.
Lopes senior
Anci Dy paced the Lopes by carding a 1-under score with three birdies to tie for first with three other golfers. Dy made birdies on holes 4, 9 and 17, and finished 1 under over her final eight holes. Dy was one of four golfers in the 43-player field to shoot under par on par-4 holes.
GCU junior
Lena Tremouille, part of the tournament's first pairing, shot 3 over with a birdie. Tremouille is tied for 14th and had the second-most pars on the team with 13.
One shot back of Tremouille is sophomore teammate
Brenna Preap, who also registered 13 pars and a team-high four birdies for her round. Preap wiped away a bogey on the par-4 15th, with a pin-seeking birdie on the par-3 16th, putting the ball within 5 feet off her tee shot and converting the putt for her second birdie over three holes. Preap had the best par-3 scoring of anyone in the tournament (2 under).
GCU senior
Alyzzah Vakasiuola returned from an injury absence and tied for 27th at 5 over, followed by graduate teammate
Calynne Rosholt at 8 over in 33rd.
The Lopes finished the first round with the most birdies in the field (11) and the third most pars (54).
Round 2 starts Tuesday at 8:50 a.m., as Rosholt will tee off first for the Lopes on the first hole.
