Lopes' impressive streak of 18 consecutive WAC series victories comes to end
Grand Canyon fell behind early and couldn't recover as Utah Valley rolled to an 18-2 victory in seven innings on Saturday night at GCU Ballpark.
GCU's impressive streak of 18 consecutive WAC series wins came to a close, as Utah Valley (24-11, 9-2 WAC) has won the first and second games of the series.
The Lopes (21-13, 8-3 WAC) will look to salvage the series tomorrow in an important finale that could see GCU re-tie the Wolverines atop the WAC standings with a victory.
Utah Valley exploded for 18 runs across the third, fourth and sixth innings, including a six-run fourth and an eight-run sixth. The Wolverines racked up 17 hits.
The Lopes managed five hits, with graduate center fielder Eddy Pelc and senior third baseman Eli Paton each driving in a run. Pelc's RBI single in the third and Paton's double in the fourth accounted for GCU's scoring.
Sophomore starting pitcher Garrett Ahern took the loss after allowing eight runs in three innings.
