The top two teams in the WAC standings meet for a three-game series at GCU Ballpark, as Grand Canyon plays host to Utah Valley.
The three-game series — with later first pitch times of 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday — will be streamed on ESPN+.
3 THINGS TO KNOW
- THE STREAK: GCU has won its last 18 WAC series consecutively and 31 of its last 33. GCU's last loss in a WAC series came back in 2023. The Lopes have the nation's best conference winning percentage (165-47, .778) in the last seven seasons.
- DIAZ'S DOMINANCE: Senior outfielder Michael Diaz is coming off of a memorable weekend from the plate. Racking up eight hits, 16 RBIs, seven runs scored and four home runs in the series at California Baptist, Diaz has gained national and conference-wide accolades. Diaz was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association National Player of the Week and the WAC Player of the Week. He was also recognized by D1Baseball.com as the 6-4-3 Charts' top hitter in the nation via a data-based metric.
- HOT BATS: GCU is coming off a series where it scored 42 runs and hit .393. It was the most runs the Lopes have scored in a three-game series since 1994 when they tacked on 52 runs against Southern Utah. Production came from up and down the lineup but was headlined by Diaz.
SCOUTING UTAH VALLEY
Utah Valley has enjoyed a strong season under first-year head coach Nate Rasmussen. After a rough start with a 2-7 February, the Wolverines posted a 16-3 record in March. Their offensive surge included scoring double-digit runs in nine different games and amassing 373 total hits—ranking sixth nationally and first in the WAC. UVU has also emerged as one of the top base-running teams in the country, swiping 65 bases on 82 attempts.
The Wolverines are defying preseason expectations, as they were picked sixth in the WAC preseason coaches poll. Utah Valley has won six of its last seven WAC series. The Wolverines are entering a critical stretch that includes series against GCU and California Baptist, with postseason positioning on the line.
