Grand Canyon clobbered Saint Joseph's with a quick and efficient 8-0 win in five innings Thursday at GCU Softball Stadium.
GCU (17-3) hit the lights out of the ball with eight of the nine starters recording a hit. Lopes sophomore catcher
Tinley Lucas, the lone player to not get a hit, walked in each of her three plate appearances.
The Lopes scored one in the first off designated player
Jada Cooper's RBI single. The freshman was coming off a week in which she homered three times to win WAC Player of the Week. Cooper scored two more runners with an RBI double in the second inning.
The second inning was where the damage was done for GCU, scoring five runs on six consecutive two-out hits.
A
Willa Ford RBI double kicked off the hit streak, giving the Lopes freshman right fielder her first collegiate RBI in her second start.
Ford's double was followed by an RBI single from sophomore second baseman
Savannah Kirk, who went 2 for 3 to bring her average to .507 through 20 games.
Gradaute center fielder
Makaiya Gomez and junior first baseman
Emily Gonzalez followed with singles before the Cooper double. Graduate left fielder Mia Weckle singled to give the Lopes their sixth straight hit.
Weckel scored again with Lucas on an RBI double down the left-field line by senior third baseman
Lovey Kepa'a for an 8-0 Lopes lead in the fourth inning.
GCU senior pitcher
Meghan Golden started in the circle and simply dominated the Hawks. Golden struck out four over four oinnings. She just allowed one hit, a hit that should not have happened. In the first inning, a blooper dropped in the middle of shortstop, left field and center field with nobody moving to make the catch.
Golden moved to 6-0 this season with a scoreless streak of 26 1/3 innings.
Freshman left-hander
Oakley Vickers came in for the fifth inning and struck out two batters to end the run-rule win.
GCU has won five straight for the second time this season. The Lopes are back in action Friday night at 7:30 when they take on Penn.
