By: Nathan Peters
Grand Canyon beach volleyball's Karynn Garrow and Sophia Hladyniuk went undefeated last weekend to earn College Beach Volleyball National Pair of the Week from the American Volleyball Coaches Assoiciation. Garrow
Garrow, a sophomore, and Hladyniuk, a senior, secured a straight-set win over No. 20 Stetson, 21-19, 21-12, on Friday to gain their first ranked win of the season. The Lopes pair followed that up with a win over host Arizona, 21-11, 18-21, 15-8.
On Saturday, Garrow and Hladyniuk continued their early-season success with a 21-9, 21-16 win over Boise State and another ranked victory over No. 11 Arizona State, rallying to win 11-21, 21-16, 17-15, to remain undefeated (8-0) on the season as the 4s pair.
Garrow, who is from Boerne, Texas, picked up impressive wins last season against No. 19 Arizona, No. 18 Stetson, No. 12 Hawai'i twice and No. 12 Washington, which earned her Coastal Collegiate Sports Association All-Freshman Team honors. Hladyniuk
Hladyniuk, who is from London Ontario, in Canada, joined the Lopes last season after beginning her collegiate career at CSU Bakersfield. In her debut season in Phoenix, she tallied victories against No. 5 LMU, No. 8 LSU and No. 5 FSU.
The honor marks the first of the season for the 18th-ranked Lopes, who are 7-1 with the lone loss coming by a 3-2 score to No. 11 Arizona State.
GCU next heads to Stanford for a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament, the MPSF Mid-Season Rumble, on Friday and Saturday. The Lopes will have matches against No. 1 UCLA, No. 3 USC, No. 9 California and Oregon.
