Big opportunities ahead in Baton Rouge for GCU
San Luis Obispo, Calif. - No. 17 Grand Canyon opened Saturday with a 4-1 victory over UC Davis at the Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex, responding to an early deficit with four consecutive wins before closing the weekend with a sweep over CSUN.Â
After three wins on the weekend, junior Karynn Garrow reached the 50 career wins mark which also put the Boerne, Texas just outside of the GCU top-10 career wins with alumni Krista Rowan occupying the 10th spot at 55 total wins.Â
UC Davis claimed the opening point on Court 4 before the Lopes quickly answered on Court 5 as Jessica Drake and Jordyn Decker defeated Ava Berard and Kirra Martin 21-12, 21-19 to even the dual.
GCU then secured three straight-court victories to close the match. Karynn Garrow and Becca Drake gave the Lopes their first lead with a 21-11, 21-14 win over Kinley Lindhardt and Ella Erteltova on Court 1.
Katie Keefe and Sarah Edler followed by clinching the dual with a 21-16, 21-19 win against Kendal Steller and Shelby Santos at the No. 2 pair, and Rhea Kohl and Mae Manthe capped the match with a 21-17, 21-11 victory over Emma Johnson and Morgan Gillinger on Court 3.
The order of finish was 4, 5, 1, 2, 3.
The Lopes followed with a sweep of CSUN in their second match of the day, highlighted by three comeback wins in three-set matches.
The first point came on Court 3 where Rhea Kohl and Mae Manthe defeated Jill Rodig and Zaria Henderson 21-16, 21-15.
Shortly after, the No. 5 pair of Youna Coens and Grace Goudy extended the lead with a 21-17, 21-16 win over Haley Coggins and Daysha Halbert.
GCU clinched the dual on Court 2 when Katie Keefe and Sarah Edler rallied for a 17-21, 21-11, 15-10 win against Tia Mendiola and Ainsley Patrick.
The Lopes finished the sweep with two more comeback victories as Karynn Garrow and Becca Drake battled back to defeat Hannah Heflin and Maleya Miles 20-22, 21-14, 15-13 on Court 1, and Jessica Drake and Jordyn Decker closed the dual with a 19-21, 21-16, 15-9 win over Ava Rogers and Dylan Hall on Court 4.
The order of finish was 3, 5, 2, 1, 4.
The Lopes will have opportunities Friday and Saturday in Baton Rouge, Louisiana against three top-15 squads with matches against Florida State, LSU, Georgia State and Texas.Â
