It would be hard for Grand Canyon women's basketball to garner more attention than
a locker room celebration video of GCU head coach
Molly Miller during the Lopes' WAC Tournament championship postgame celebration.
That video has drawn 3.4 million views on X, but others are weighing on the 13th-seeded GCU (32-2) debut in the NCAA Division I tournament against fourth-seeded Baylor (27-7) in Waco, Texas. The first-round game at 12:30 p.m. Friday will be broadcast on ESPNU.
One of "10 most likely first-round upsets."
"The Lopes (32-2), who face No. 4 seed Baylor in the first round, hold the longest winning streak in the country, winners of 30 consecutive games including a 65-62 rally over UT Arlington in the Western Athletic Conference championship game. Key contributor: Senior guard
Trinity San Antonio leads the team offensively averaging 15.7 points and 5.5 assists. Senior guard
Tiarra Brown averages 2.7 steals and 1.3 blocks."Â
One of "10 games to watch."
"The longest winning streak in the country belongs to the Lopes, who rattled off 30 straight victories to close the season, which included posting a perfect 16–0 record in the WAC. Though strength of schedule will be called into question, Grand Canyon took down two Big 12 teams and smashed Liberty (another autobid recipient) in nonconference play. Baylor is a tough draw with its depth and balanced scoring ability, but Grand Canyon's three-point shooting (38.1%, sixth nationally) could surprise the Bears."
"It should be a good one because they got the best 13 seed in the country. The Grand Canyon Antelopes are coming into town with a ton of bravado. I don't like this draw at all."
JORDAN BRENNER and PETER KEATING, The Athletic
"No. 13 Grand Canyon vs. No. 4 Baylor ... Upset Chance: 14.4 percent"
"Despite making its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament, Grand Canyon is far from a pushover. The Antelopes have the best record in the country (32-2), have wins over Big 12 teams Arizona and Arizona State, and are riding a nation-leading 30-game winning streak after romping through the WAC. Grand Canyon is second in the country in field goal percentage (49.3), sixth in three-point percentage (38.1), sixth in steals per game (13.0), and 10th in turnovers forced per game (22.3)."
"Grand Canyon (32-2) capped its perfect run through the Western Athletic Conference with the tournament title Saturday to earn a trip to its first NCAA tournament. The Lopes bring the nation's longest win streak -- their 30 consecutive victories is also a WAC record -- to March Madness. Featuring WAC Player of the YearÂ
Trinity San Antonio, Defensive Player of the YearÂ
Tiarra Brown and Coach of the Year
Molly Miller, the Lopes display a well-balanced attack on the court. San Antonio led the team in scoring (15.5 PPG) and made 72 more assists than any of her teammates (165 total). Brown finished second on the team in rebounding (146) and was the team leader in blocks (37) and steals (37)."
