Lopes’ head coach of 10 years was 2024 AVCA Coach of Year, led GCU to national semifinal
After a decade at the helm of the Grand Canyon men's volleyball program, Lopes head coach Matt Werle has accepted a position as a women's volleyball associate head coach at the University of Kansas.
Assistant coaches Bryan Dell'Amico and Jon Girten will lead the program for the remainder of the 2025 season.
"It is hard to put into words what my 13 years at GCU has meant to me," Werle said. "I am so grateful for President Brian Mueller, (Vice President of Athletics) Jamie Boggs and the athletic administration for all their support and for trusting me with this program. I leave with everlasting memories and relationships. I thank the Arizona volleyball community for getting behind this program. Lastly, I thank my wife, my parents and the rest of my family for bleeding purple with me over the years and supporting me as we turn the page to a new chapter."
Werle guided the Lopes to their first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship and NCAA tournament win in 2024 and was named American Volleyball Coaches Association Coach of the Year. The team also achieved its first No. 1 national ranking under Werle and earned 13 AVCA All-American selections. Werle became GCU's winningest coach in 2020 and ends his head coaching tenure with 161 wins and a winning percentage of .631.
"We thank Coach Werle for his extended service at GCU and leading our men's volleyball program to new heights culminating with last year's national semifinal appearance," Boggs said. "Lope Nation wishes Coach Werle and his family well in this next chapter, and we will be rooting for continued success in his coaching career."
