No. 3 Florida gives GCU opportunity for biggest win ever

GCU/ASU Classic \| Feb. 21-23, 2025 \| GCU Softball Stadium \| Phoenix, Ariz.

	GRAND CANYON LOPES (10-2)	vs.	PORTLAND STATE VIKINGS (3-7)
			IOWA STATE CYCLONES (4-5)
			No. 3 FLORIDA GATORS (13-1)

Grand Canyon co-hosts the GCU/ASU Classic with Arizona State this weekend, including a Saturday night visit from the No. 3 Florida Gators.

3 THINGS TO KNOW

Grand Canyon was ranked as the sixth-best mid-major team via D1Softball.com and received eight votes in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's top-25 rankings.
GCU's pitching staff has the No. 13 WHIP and No. 7 strikeout-to-walk ratio in the nation through the first two and a half weeks of the season.
GCU earned its first win ever over perennial powerhouse Washington on Feb. 15, beating the Huskies 9-5 at home.

SCOUTING PORTLAND STATE (4 p.m. Friday)

Portland State is 3-7 on the season.
PSU's Neveah Smith is hitting .517 through her first nine games.
GCU holds a 2-1 record against Portland State, playing all of the previous games at home.

SCOUTING IOWA STATE (6:30 p.m. Friday)

The Cyclones enter the weekend with a 4-5 record, winning three of their last four games. This includes wins over Oregon State and Southern Utah.
GCU is 1-2 all-time against Iowa State, playing every game at GCU Softball Stadium.

SCOUTING FLORIDA (6:30 p.m. Saturday)

The Gators enter with a 13-1 record. Florida is ranked third in the nation, starting the season 13-1. The Gators lost in the 2024 College World Series semifinals. They lead the nation in scoring with 8.3 runs per game.
Florida infielder Rylee Holtorf is sisters with GCU Class of 2025 signee Raegan Holtorf.
GCU has never played Florida.

LAST TIME OUT

GCU vs. Arizona State

The Lopes beat ASU 3-0 on Tuesday night.
It was the first time ASU had been shut out this season and gave the all-time series advantage to the Lopes (3-2).
GCU graduate outfielder Makaiya Gomez took the lead via home run to deep center field in the bottom of the fourth, and sophomore Maggie Place pitched 4 2/3 shutout innings in relief.

WHAT'S NEXT?

The Lopes host four more teams next weekend for the GCU/ASU Invite, including Utah State, Oregon State and UTEP.
