After receiving its first AP Top 25 vote, Grand Canyon showed its home crowd every reason it should be in the national rankings conversation Thursday night with a 76-60 win against Tarleton State that gives GCU the nation's longest active winning streak at 21.
News and notes
- After winning by four points at Tarleton State three weeks ago, GCU earned a double-digit win for the sixth consecutive time Thursday. The home win against the Texans improved its record-breaking mark to 16-0 at Global Credit Union Arena this season.
- Senior guard Trinity San Antonio set a new season high in points with 27, shooting 50% from the floor and going 7 for 7 from the free throw line. The 27-point outing tied senior guard teammate Alyssa Durazo-Frescas' 27 against Park Gilbert for most single-game points by a Lope this season.
- Durazo-Frescas knocked down three 3-pointers in the first half, tying Samantha Murphy (2010-11) for most 3-pointers in a single season in GCU history. Durazo- Frescas also set a new season high with six rebounds.
- With a GCU win and a UT Arlington loss later in the evening, the Lopes now hold a two-game advantage over the Mavericks in the WAC standings. UT Arlington comes to Phoenix on Saturday for a top-two WAC showdown.
"This team has a focus mentality, and we knew Tarleton State was going to be tough going into tonight," Lopes head coach
Molly Miller said. "We knew they were going to come in here and give it their best game, and we weathered some storms throughout. We had a great start early, which is something we didn't have last time we played them. It helps that we had one of the nation's best 3-point shooters out on the floor for us too."
A vast difference from the Jan. 18 meeting in Stephenville, Texas, was on hand for the Lopes, who scored 18 first-quarter points after totaling 20 first-half points in the previous meeting. In that road contest, GCU failed to make a 3-pointer with Durazo-Frescas a game-time injury scratch. The Newport, California, native made her first attempt Thursday to quickly thwart that happening again.
GCU held an 18-15 advantage after one quarter with a lead no larger than four points.
The second-quarter scoring remained the same while the Lopes defense stepped up, forcing six turnovers and holding Tarleton State (16-10, 7-4 WAC) to 33% shooting from the field after making 66% of its shots in the first quarter. Durazo-Frescas added two more 3s and the Lopes led by as many as 13 twice before half.
San Antonio tallied 15 of her 27 in the first half, adding eight more in the third while the Lopes pressured the outside shooting of the Texans to an 0-of-5 showing and 3 of 11 from the floor. Graduate forwar
Tiarra Brown scored seven of her 10 points in the third quarter to help orchestrate a 20-point lead into the fourth quarter
The Lopes scored 40 points in the paint, due in part to offensive rebounds from graduates
Laura Erikstrup and
Kristyna Jeskeova. GCU totaled 11 offensive boards for the second time against the Texans and 11th time this season.
GCU stays home and hosts second-place UT Arlington on Saturday at 2 p.m. The game is the third-to-last regular home game of the season, with both remaining home games coming March 1 and March 8.
