Grand Canyon fell to Boise State 1-0 in Phoenix on Thursday night, giving the Broncos the Mountain West regular-season title for their second consecutive year.
GCU (8-8-1, 3-5-1 MW) needed a win to remain in realistic contention Thursday evening but fell short, losing back-to-back matches for the first time this season.
After 45 minutes of play, the Lopes had not recorded a shot on goal, getting outshot 16--3 by Boise State in the first half.
The Broncos (9-3-6, 7-0-2 MW) scored in the fifth minute of the contest when Kenzie MacMillan rebounding GCU junior goalkeeper
Emma Knack's punch-away attempt and scored on an empty net.
Boise State has not lost a match since Sept. 7, when it lost its third conference match in a row. The Broncos ride a six-match win streak after Thursday's victory.
The Lopes, despite a rough start, played like the better team in the second half, possessing the ball enough to sway the overall possession battle by the end of the match.
GCU had three solid opportunities at equalizing the match in the second half, including sophomore forward
Reese Clem's right-footed banger from outside the box that sailed high. In the 70th minute, senior winger
Hannah Smith broke free down the right sideline and sent a dangerous cross into the middle of the box. After a quick deflection, senior forward
Payton Fisher jumped on the ball and fired a strike on goal, but it was saved by the keeper with a diving effort.
In a last-ditch effort in the 86th minute, Lopes senior forward
Maddie Brady made a run down the left side and placed a beautiful left-footed ball into the box that was headed by freshman
Mai-Helen Nguyen Todnem, whose attempt went right of the goal.
Knack added another six saves to her record-breaking season, securing all of them in the first half. Boise State did not take a second-half shot on goal.
With the loss, GCU finds itself in a place it has not been in a while: on the brink of elimination from a postseason spot. With a win in their final match Sunday at Colorado College, the Lopes may have a chance iff the chips fall their way with some help and good fortune.
Sunday's match will kick off at 1 p.m. (Phoenix time) at GCU Stadium. A pregame Lopes ceremony will honor nine seniors, four of whom played their entire careers at Grand Canyon.
