Setter/opposite becomes 1st freshman to claim both MW awards this season
Grand Canyon setter/opposite freshman Bella Nunez earned Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week after turning in one of her most complete performances of the season, powering the Lopes to back-to-back wins over UNLV and New Mexico last week.
Across seven sets, Nunez totaled 22 kills, 35 assists, 23 digs, five blocks, two service aces and 27 points while hitting an efficient .404 with no reception errors and a .962 serve percentage. She averaged 3.1 kills, 5.0 assists, and 3.9 points per set, reflecting her versatility as a scorer and facilitator.
This marks the first time this season that a MW freshman player has claimed double honors,
Nunez now ranks fourth in the country in triple-doubles with four after recording back-to-back ones last week. Three of her triple-doubles have come in conference play, and she is one away from second place nationally.
The El Paso native's week opened with a strong Thursday night showing in a 3–1 road win at UNLV, where she posted 11 kills, 21 assists, 11 digs and four blocks, contributing 14.5 points with a .385 hitting percentage.
She followed that with another well-rounded performance in a 3–0 Saturday home sweep of New Mexico, recording 11 kills, 14 assists, 12 digs and a service ace while hitting .429.
Nunez's offensive efficiency and consistency on both sides of the ball anchored GCU's attack, as she produced double-digit kills and digs in each match and maintained elite ball control from the service and reception lines.
