Grand Canyon fell 1-0 in frustrating fashion to Incarnate Word at home Thursday night.
GCU (6-3-1) fired 27 shots, 10 of which were on goal, but could not find the back of the net once.Â
Incarnate Word (3-3-2) just got off six shots, three of which were on goal. Cardinals goalkeeper Erica Defferding came to play, racking up nine saves and keeping the Lopes off the scoreboard.
A 64% possession advantage for the Lopes allowed for a flurry of shots in the second half, when GCU put consistent pressure on the back line. However, Incarnate Word held strong.
The Cardinals' goal came in the 24th minute when forward Sinead Duffy made a run toward goal. Lopes graduate defender
Alex Sampson was at Duffy's left hip and goalkeeper
DeAira Jackson crashed in to make the save. Jackson made a play on the ball and got to it. Duffy tumbled over Jackson, but Sampson was called for a push in the box to award a penalty kick to the Cardinals.
Duffy capitalized by scoring on the penalty kick, marking the second loss in two weeks that was decided by a penalty kick after GCU fell 1-0 at LMU under similar circumstances.
The Lopes can only look forward, especially with the biggest test of the season awaiting them. No. 7 Utah State comes to town Sunday night at 7 in GCU Stadium.
It will be an opportunity to do more than right the ship. The Lopes can take down a ranked opponent for the first time in program history.
GCU students, the Havocs, will stage a pregame "March to the Match" and the atmosphere forecasts to be a great one.
