UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – A course that has hosted the 2015 U.S. Open and the 2022 U.S. Women's Amateur, Chambers Bay Golf Course welcomed 16 teams for the Leadership and Golf Invitational on Monday.
With tee time weather in the mid-50s and golfers sporting beanies and coats, Grand Canyon started slow through the first nine holes before, like the weather, it heated up to propel up the leaderboard. The Lopes finished sixth through the first two rounds with the final round Tuesday.
GCU's 7-over team score is two strokes back of fifth-place Gonzaga. USC leads the field at 5 under, followed by Colorado in second (3 under) and Oregon State in third (even par).
The Lopes were 8 over early in the first round but bounced back to finish the round 3 over. GCU graduate
Calynne Rosholt led the team at 2 under par while seniors
Alyzzah Vakasiuola and
Anci Dy, and sophomore
Brenna Preap each shot 2 over.
Rosholt led the charge in the second round, carding a 2-under score to finish 4 under for the day. Her score is tied for eighth overall, five back of the overall leader. Vakasiuola is the second of two Lopes in the top 15 after Day 1,. She is tied for 14th at even par after her 1-under second round. The duo helped GCU have the fifth-best second round as a team.
"It was a pretty solid day today," Rosholt said. "I had some really good feel out there and felt solid overall, especially my iron shots. I was sticking the ball pretty close to the pin today, and with these greens, it was necessary with all the slopes they have."
Dy (37th), Preap (45th) and sophomore
Lena Tremouille (82nd) round out the starting five in the standings. Sophomore
Jess Haines competed as an individual and shot even par in the second round to total a 4-over card, which was good for 31st.
The third and final round begins Tuesday morning with a shotgun tee time start at 8.
