RENO, Nev. — Grand Canyon grabbed its first road win on Sunday afternoon, taking down Nevada 1-0 for its fifth shutout on Lopes graduate forward
Ellie Crisler's first-half goal.
GCU (6-2-1) recorded its second straight shutout and only has allowed one goal in the past five matches, ranking 19th nationally for goals allowed per match (0.44).
Lopes senior goalkeeper
DeAira Jackson was lights out with seven saves, which tied her season high. Jackson had two moments when she made multiple saves consecutively, using her hands and feet as means to keep the ball out of the back of the net.
"That was one of DJ's best performances of the year," GCU head coach
Chris Cissell said. "She was absolutely fantastic and we do not win this match without her in goal."
Nevada (2-5) played a physical match on its home turf of Mackay Stadium, consistently following up shots to get multiple attempts per attack.
The Lopes' back line had its hands full but ultimately took care of business to assist Jackson in the shutout. Defenders
Destinee Duran-Wise,
Sidney Roberts and
Alex Sampson all took big hits and were visibly banged up throughout the match.
"I told the team this was one of my favorite matches of the season," Cissell said. "Going on the road, sustaining injuries and ultimately finding a way to beat a good team in their house. These girls are gritty grinders, and I am so proud of them."
GCU had to figure things out offensively as well, and the answer was Crisler off the bench. She made her presence known by scoring less than two minutes after entering the match.
In the 43rd minute, Lopes junior midfielder
Grace Bartlett launched a throw-in pass into the box. After a quick touch from Roberts, Crisler stepped up and placed a shot past the diving goalkeeper to take the lead.
"We worked on a long throw-in play in training this week," Cissell said. "With the field being narrow and Grace's ability to throw it, the play came to fruition. It was a great goal by Ellie."
Bartlett and Roberts were credited for assists, adding to the team total of 14 players with an assist for GCU this season. Crisler scored her team-leading third goal of the season.
Defensively, by the numbers, the Lopes are on another level of great. They have allowed just four goals on the season, with one coming in the second half. GCU has not allowed multiple goals in a match this year.
GCU will host Incarnate Word on Thursday, looking for its third straight win and shutout.
The game kicks off at 7 p.m. (Phoenix time) and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
