Avitia participates in invitation-only MLB Draft Combine

GCU junior pitcher works out for professional assessment at Chase Field
Grand Canyon junior right-handed pitcher Daniel Avitia took part in the invitation-only MLB Draft Combine this week at Chase Field in Phoenix.
With the MLB Draft approaching on July 14-16, Avitia was among 193 college players who were chosen by MLB and USA Baseball scouting personnel to participate. Since Tuesday, players have been performing in scouted workouts and going through strength and conditioning assessments at the Arizona Diamondbacks' home stadium.
Once the medical and performance assessments and team interviews are complete, each draft-eligible prospect receives a customized report. The event also includes educational programming to prepare players for their transition to professional baseball.

itia's invitation came after a season in which the 6-foot-4, 215-pounder was limited to 35 innings because of a throwing arm injury. The Phoenix native, who attended Alhambra High School a half-mile from GCU Ballpark, set the Lopes' Division I-era record for career strikeouts with 237.
Avitia ranked in the national top 50 among active D-I players for strikeouts (47th) and fewest walks per nine innings (also 47th at 2.09).
As a member of WAC regular-season champions in each of his three seasons, Avitia used his mix of a fastball, change-up and slider to accumulate a career 4.09 ERA.
Avitia participated in the Prospect Development Pipeline performance assessments, which measure cognitive skills, processing speed, athleticism and on-field talent. A pro-style showcase workout also included strength testing and interviews with MLB general managers and scouting directors.
