Lopes, Devils meet for Nov. 14 men's, women's games at Footprint Center
The Valley of the Sun features four Division I basketball programs, but it takes an event like the Hall of Fame Series to put them under roof for a hoop doubleheader.
Grand Canyon and Arizona State will meet in men's and women's basketball games Nov. 14 at Footprint Center as part of the Hall of Fame Series Phoenix put on by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and Position Sports. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Wednesday on HOFSeries.com with game times and broadcast information announced at a later date.
GCU and ASU have not met in men's basketball since a two-year, home-and-home series with Sun Devils wins in 2020-21 (71-70 at ASU) and 2021-22 (67-62 at GCU). The Lopes and Sun Devils played on the women's side in the past two seasons with each road team winning — GCU won 66-59 at ASU in December and ASU won 80-72 at GCU in December 2020.
In last season's NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET) final rankings, the Lopes men finished No. 50 and the GCU women were No. 93 with the Sun Devils men at No. 134 and ASU women at No. 117.
The Lopes men are coming off a 30-5 season with WAC regular-season and WAC Tournament championships before claiming its second win against a top-25 team at the NCAA tournament, where GCU defeated No. 15 Saint Mary's 75-66 before falling to Final Four team Alabama 72-61.
Four of the Lopes' top six scorers return from their winningest Division I-era team, including starters Duke Brennan, Ray Harrison and Collin Moore. Brennan, 6-foot-10 center from Chandler, played his freshman season for ASU.
GCU has played at Footprint Center, the Phoenix Suns' and Mercury's downtown arena, in seven of the past eight seasons with COVID crowd restrictions canceling the arena event in 2020.
"It's a privilege to play in the Hall of Fame Series," said GCU head coach Bryce Drew, who has led the Lopes to three NCAA tournament appearances in four seasons at GCU. "We're really excited to play in Footprint Center in a game with the two Phoenix teams. It's a great event for basketball in Phoenix."
The Sun Devils, who will be in their first Big 12 season in 2024-25, went 14-18 last season after making the NCAA tournament in 2023 for the third time under nine-year head coach Bobby Hurley
"We are excited for the opportunity to play GCU at the Footprint Center," Hurley said. "It will be an outstanding matchup for basketball fans in the Valley. I've got a ton of respect for the program that GCU has built. We are always looking to challenge ourselves with these type o games in the nonconference to get ready for conference play."
GCU women's basketball has gone 85-35 (.708) in four years under head coach Molly Miller, whose team will return leading scorers Tiarra Brown and Trinity San Antonio from a 24-8 season.
"In this moment of growth for the women's game, the opportunity to play ASU in the Hall of Fame Series is great for our sport and basketball fans," Miller said. "Showcasing both teams in the doubleheader will no doubt be a treat and a highlight for our local community. We are excited to be a part of such a great event."
The ASU women will be in their third season under head coach Natasha Adair, who led Delaware to the 2022 NCAA tournament before 8-20 and 11-20 seasons with the Sun Devils.
"We are so excited to play in the Hall of Fame Series again this year at Footprint Center in November," Adair said. "Being able to play where our own WNBA Phoenix Mercury play will be a wonderful experience for our student-athletes. Last year's event was a top-notch experience, and we can't wait to activate the Valley and have our friends and family cheering us on."
