Grand Canyon sophomore lefty
Grant Richardson was named the WAC Pitcher of the Week for the first time in his career.
Making his second career weekend start, Richardson tossed six shutout innings at Seattle U on Friday. He struck out a career-high 10 batters and allowed only one hit in GCU's 7-0 win.
"Grant was awesome," second-year Lopes pitching coachÂ
Nathan BannisterÂ
said following the win. "He attacked the zone and was pitching in pitcher counts. When he's in those counts and you add in his swing-and-miss stuff, he's a tough matchup. I'm proud of the way he competed tonight."
Richardson never faced more than four batters in an inning and only one Redhawk advanced into scoring position.
For Richardson, it was his second consecutive scoreless start after throwing five scoreless innings against Utah Tech last week. Combined with one scoreless inning to end an April 9 outing against Arizona State, Richardson has thrown 12 scoreless innings consecutively.
Richardson joins freshman right-hander
Connor Mattison as the two Lopes to receive the WAC Pitcher of the Week distinction this season.
The Lopes take on Arizona in Tucson on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before opening a seven-game homestand on Friday that concludes the home schedule.
