Grand Canyon dropped a 9-8 decision at Arizona State on Tuesday night, as the Lopes could not hold a late lead and fell to the Sun Devils in walk-off fashion.
Senior second baseman
Dustin Crenshaw had a four-hit performance including three for extra bases and none bigger than a seventh-inning grand slam that flipped a two-run deficit into a two-run lead.
GCU (15-12) came roaring back from a 6-2 deficit with a two-run sixth inning and Crenshaw's grand slam. The Lopes held an advantage into the ninth, but a single and two walks loaded up the bases for Arizona State (15-14) who won on a walk-off double.
The Lopes out-hit the Sun Devils 14-10, but GCU pitchers issued nine walks to ASU's five.
GCU relievers
Ben Smith and
Walter Quinn were both impressive in scoreless appearances. Senior closer
Nathan Ward had picked up a win or a save in five of his last six outings but struggled with his command on Tuesday and was handed a loss for the first time in his 22 GCU appearances.
The Lopes got on the board first with single-run tallies in the second and third innings. In the second inning, Crenshaw drove in junior designated hitter
Beau Ankeney who doubled. In the third inning, senior left fielder
Tyler Wilson hit a sacrifice fly to put the Lopes up 2-0.
Arizona State quickly erased GCU's advantage with a five-run third inning. A leadoff walk started things off and the Sun Devils racked up four hits in the frame.
ASU tacked on another run in the fourth after back-to-back walks opened the inning.
GCU began its rally in the sixth thanks to four consecutive two-out hits. Seniors
Alton Gyselman and
Eddy Pelc each drove in a run to pull the Lopes within 6-4.
In the seventh, GCU loaded the bases on a single by sophomore first baseman
Zach Yorke, a walk by Wilson and a pinch-hit single by junior
Blake Avila. That set the stage for Crenshaw's grand slam that was hit to straightaway center field and represented his third homer of the season.
The Sun Devils showed life in the bottom of the seventh with a run to make it 8-7. GCU should have gotten out of the inning unscathed, but Crenshaw slipped while covering second base and a run scored.
Ward opened the ninth on the right foot with a strikeout, but Arizona State's next four batters reached base on two hits and two walks to end the game.
GCU has recorded at least 12 base hits in its last three games, as Crenshaw matched a career high with four hits and set a career high with nine total bases. The Lopes had potential to do more damage as well, stranding 11 men on base.
The Lopes continue nonconference action with a four-game set at Saint Mary's that begins on Thursday in Moraga, California.
