Lopes face difficulties in losses at Stanford

GCU closes regular season with matches vs. Washington, UC Davis on Saturday
STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 17 Grand Canyon beach volleyball team closed out the first day of weekend matches Friday with two 5-0 losses on the road to top-10 programs No.3 Stanford and No.8 Cal.
GCU and No. 8 Cal battled first this morning where Mackenzie Harris and Jessica Drake fell in the first set 23-21. In the second, the pair came out with a 21-18 win to force the third set. Despite the battle, the Lopes came up short in the deciding set with a 21-19 loss. The pair then lost in straight sets to the third ranked Stanford Cardinal.
Hailey Hutchings and Elly Collins lost in their opening set before battling back with a 21-17 second set win. In the third set, the pair lost a tight one 15-13.
Despite the solid effort the Lopes were unable to capitalize on the major points at the end of the sets, leaving them with two losses on day one.
GCU will look to regroup Saturday against No.12 Washington and UC Davis before heading to the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association Championship tournament.
