Grand Canyon hosts a pair of midweek matchups against Pac-12 foes Arizona and Washington State on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. Both games will start at 7 p.m. and stream on ESPN+.
3 THINGS TO KNOW
- CREATING A CAT-ALOG: For the fourth consecutive season, GCU and Arizona will play three times this season. The Lopes dropped the first meeting to the Wildcats 6-4 in Tucson on March 19 despite Zach Yorke's three-hit night. The teams will play again in Tucson on April 30. In the last meeting at GCU Ballpark, the Lopes won on a 12th-inning, two-out walkoff single by now-senior Elijah Buries. The last four GCU-Arizona games have been decided by a total of six runs.
- LOPES TO COUGS: First-year Washington State head coach Nathan Choate developed his coaching chops at GCU from 2011 to 2016, when he served as the program's pitching coach and recruiting coordinator. In 2015, he was a part of the Lopes' first WAC championship team and a national top-35 recruiting class. Choate and Cougars assistant coach Joe Perez, then a four-year GCU director of basketball operations, worked alongside GCU head coach Gregg Wallis for three years.
- NATIONALLY NOTED: GCU is among the nation's top 20% in the major categories for hitting, pitching and fielding: .304 batting average (ranked 43rd), 4.83 ERA (55th) and .977 fielding percentage (39th). The Lopes have turned 30 double plays, the 30th most in the nation, while not hitting into a double play for 11 consecutive games.
SCOUTING ARIZONA
Arizona is ranked 21st nationally with an 11-game winning streak, the longest active streak in the nation. The Wildcats pitching staff has proven to be among the nation's best with a 3.70 ERA that ranks eighth and the national lead for walks per nine innings (2.48). The Arizona arms also are third nationally with 3.8 strikeouts per nine innings. Tucson native Mason White has the most home runs (13) by a Wildcats shortstop since 1998 and lead the Pac-12 in RBIs with 46. Arizona is the only team in the nation to boast two players with five triples this season — outfielders Emilio Corona and Brendan Summerhill.
Zastrow, Tuesday's starter, is making his first start of the season after four consecutive shutout relief appearances. The senior left-hander was Arizona's ERA leader last season, when he made 15 starts.
SCOUTING WASHINGTON STATE
Washington State has lost four games in a row and eight of its past nine. Last weekend, the Cougars were swept at home by California. The Cougars average a double play per game, putting them ninth in the nation for that with a .975 fielding percentage. Washington State has allowed 28 home runs in 34 games with five of those coming against Cal last weekend. The Cougars, who play at Arizona this weekend, are batting .220 over the past 10 games.
