Casey Shingler is joining the GCU women's volleyball staff as associate head coach.
"I am extremely excited to welcome Casey Shingler to the GCU family," new Lopes head coach Kendra Potts said. "Casey brings in a wealth of knowledge and experience to our staff and knows how to win at the highest level. More importantly, Casey has an amazing way of connecting with every person he meets which creates an amazing environment for our student-athletes and the GCU community."
Shingler comes to GCU after spending the 2023 season at UTSA, where the Roadrunners went 15-15 in their first season in the American Athletic Conference. Prior to being in San Antonio, Shingler spent the previous six seasons on Potts' West Texas A&M staff as an assistant coach for his first three years before being promoted in 2019 to associate head coach. In 2022, Shingler was named the American Volleyball Coaches Associaion's Division II Assistant Coach of the Year for helping guide the Lady Buffs to a national championship.
During that Division II national championships season, the Lady Buffs went 16-0 in Lone Star Conference play and 33-4 overall. In 2021, Shingler's second season as associate head coach, West Texas A&M claimed its 16th Lone Star Conference Tournament crown as well as its 14th NCAA South Central Regional title. In the challenging COVID-shortened 2020 season, West Texas A&M went 9-3 in conference play and 10-4 overall.
In his first season with Potts, Shingler helped guide the Lady Buffs to a 23-14 record with a 12-8 mark in Lone Star Conference play. The strong 2017 performance landed West Texas A&M in the D-II South Central Regional, where it made a run to the regional championship before falling to Regis. In 2019, West Texas A&M made a run to the regional quarterfinals and finished 22-7.
A native of Tucson, Arizona, Shingler graduated from Arizona with a B.S. in physical education in 2009 and completed his master's degree in educational leadership from Arkansas-Monticello in 2012. While at Arizona, Shingler was a libero for the club men's volleyball team that won a 2009 Mountain West Conference title and finished fifth nationally.
After graduation, Shingler was hired as an assistant coach at Arkansas-Monticello. When he was promoted to head coach in 2011, he more than doubled the team's win total and claimed four conference matches in the Great American Conference after the team had gone winless in league play in 2010. During the 2012 season, Shingler was an assistant coach at Pennsylvania. During his time at Penn, the Quakers produced the nation's highest dig average and All-American honoree Dani Shepard.
Shingler also has coached at the club level, leading multiple teams to top-16 finishes, including a Zona 17-1 second-place finish at the 2014 Far Westerners Qualifier and a fifth-place finish at the 2014 Girls Junior National Championship.
