The No.16 Grand Canyon beach volleyball team closed the first match of the weekend Friday with a 3-2 home loss to No. 19 Arizona.
The Lopes (7-10) struggled in the first two flights of the match with the No. 2 pair and No. 4 pair falling in third sets.
GCU's No. 5 pair of graduate
Mackenzie Harris and junior
Jessica Drake won its sixth consecutive match by a 21-19, 21-18 score Friday.
The Lopes' No. 3 pair of freshman
Adriana Serrano Ferro and
Karynn Garrow also won in straight 21-19, 21-18 to even the team score at 2-2.
The comeback effort against the Wildcats fell just short.
GCU's No. 1 pair of senior
Krista Rowan and junior
Sophia Hladyniuk lost the deciding match in a tight battle with a score of 30-28, 21-16.
The Lopes Invitational will continue Saturday with GCU facing No. 18 Stetson (12 p.m.) and No. 12 Arizona State (2 p.m.).
