GCU middle blocker collects 19 blocks, 7 digs for 2nd MPSF honor

For the second time this season, Grand Canyon sophomore middle blocker Cameron Thorne was named the Mountian Pacific Sports Federation's Defensive Player of the Week.

The Hollywood, Florida, native made his presence known at the prestigious Outrigger Invitational in Hawaii this weekend, collecting 19 blocks with seven digs in three matches against ranked opponents.

Thorne and the Lopes faced off against No. 5 UC Irvine, No. 3 Hawaii and No. 14 Lewis in the span of three days, and Thorne excelled offensively and defensively. Against the Flyers on Sunday, Thorne collected a career-high eight blocks and led GCU to a dramatic reverse sweep against Lewis after falling behind 2-0.

For the weekend, Thorne averaged a team-high 1.5 blocks per set while also adding 2.5 kills per set and 3.2 points per set on the offensive end.

The Lopes, who are 16-2 after a 1-2 weekend, will be back in action on Friday and Saturday against NJIT in Global Credit Union Arena.
