For the second time this season, Grand Canyon earned weekly conference honors. Sophomore middle blocker
Cameron Thorne was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Defensive Player of the Week.
Â
Thorne led the Lopes with 13 blocks in two road sweeps over No. 6 BYU. The Hollywood, Florida, native set a new career high with seven blocks in Friday's win while adding three digs. The Lopes outblocked the Cougars 22.5 to 12.5.
Â
Thorne has impressed defensively in his second season as a Lope, leading the team with 47 blocks this season in 36 sets. His 1.21 blocks per set ranks second in the MPSF and fifth nationally.
Â
The Lopes are the only undefeated team in men's volleyball, sitting at 11-0 with a 2-0 start in conference play. GCU stayed at No. 2 in the most recent American Volleyball Coaches Association national poll but closed the gap on No. 1 Long Beach State to just four points. GCU earned eight first-place votes while Long Beach State received 14.
Â
The Lopes will be back in action this weekend against USC at Global Credit Union Arena on Friday and Saturday.
