Grand Canyon won its seventh consecutive game to claim the nation's best record at 24-2 by edging California Baptist 79-76 Saturday night at Global Credit Union Arena, where the Lopes are 14-0 this season. GCU extended its hold on first place in the WAC to 2 1/2 games over Tarleton State, where GCU plays Thursday night in Stephenville, Texas, as the first of its final five regular-season games.
Key player
GCU junior guard
Ray Harrison posted his second consecutive six-assist, no-turnover game. Harrison made 5 of 6 shots, including a made 3-pointer, and added a steal while managing foul trouble.
Key moment
The Lopes were trailing 66-65 with 4:30 remaining when California Baptist forward Hunter Goodrick fouled out, giving graduate power forward
Gabe McGlothan go-ahead free throws. That started a 12-4 run that cinched the game with senior guard
Tyon Grant-Foster hitting consecutive 3-pointers.
Key statistic
Each GCU reserve had the only positive plus-minus results for the game with graduate point guard
Jovan Blacksher Jr. putting up a plus-15 and senior guard
Josh Baker and graduate forward Lok Wur each having a plus-seven. Wur scored in double digts for the fourth time in the past five games.
Quotable
Lopes head coach
Bryce Drew on the bench impact: "Jovan, Josh and Isaiah were all here last year practicing together and you throw Gabe in there and Ray. That group is more familiar with what hte conference looks like and the preps and what we're used to.and the other guys are learning on the job so to speak as we go through."
What's next?
GCU will return to the road next week for a game at second-place Tarleton State on Thursday night before staying in Texas for a game next Saturday at Abilene Christian. The Texans were idle Saturday night, giving them a week to prepare to attempt to close the 2 1/2-game gap behind GCU. The Lopes defeated the Texans 74-48 on Jan. 13 in Phoenix.
