Erikstrup, Durazo-Frescas combined for 55 points last week
Grand Canyon swept WAC weekly awards with graduate forward Laura Erikstrup and senior guard Alyssa Durazo-Frescas earning the conference's Player of the Week and Newcomer of the Week, respectively.
In GCU's 90-31 victory over Westcliff on Saturday evening, Erikstrup guided the Lopes in the first half with 20 points, ending her night with a well-rounded stat line of 22 points, six rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocked shots. It was her second 20-plus scoring effort of the season and third straight game with six or more rebounds.
Erikstrup, who is from Portland, Oregon, extended her streak of double-digit scoring performances to six games after having a career long of two consecutive double-digit scoring games previously. On the season, the 6-foot-2 forward is averaging 13.4 points and a team-high 5.5 rebounds per game while shooting a career-best 55% from the field.
Durazo-Frescas led the Lopes in the second half, pouring in four 3-pointers in the third quarter threes to finish with 23 points, two rebounds, three assists and seven made 3-pointers. The seven makes from distance finished one shy of tying the GCU single-game record. She also finished one point shy of her career high by notching her third 20-point scoring game of the season.
The 5-foot-7 guard from Newport Beach, California, leads GCU with 14.4 points per game. Her 3.5 made 3-pointers per game ranks sixth nationally while her 47.3% accuracy on 3-pointers is 18th best nationally.
The award is Erikstrup's first this season, while Durazo-Frescas notches her third award after sweeping the weekly honors on Nov. 18.
GCU (8-2) takes a six-game winning streak into the Have Fayth Christmas Classic that features the Lopes playing Wright State at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Florida Atlantic at 2:30 p.m. Thursday and Georgia Southern at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in Global Credit Union Arena.
